text, light, mirrors
"A magical space that left me floating ... that
quietened me ... that allowed me to breathe deeply."
Jill Greenhalgh, theatre director (UK)
I have been making installations with mirrors and projections of animated text since 2010, when Eva Ursprung and I experimented with large foil mirrors salvaged from a previous exhibition.
I had already begun to explore the use of small flexible mirrors with projections, initially with Suzon Fuks and James Cunningham.
The large foil mirrors enabled Eva and I to create an immersive space where visitors could move around in a dynamic virtual architecture of text.
"The installation was original and beautiful
and came as a stark surpise from the location it was placed
in. It gave me a direct emotional message of darkness, sorrow
and sweet beauty."
Geddy Aniksdal, actor, Grenland Friteater (Norway)
I have now created five such mirror installations, and am working on a sixth that will become part of a permanent archive,
LAFLIS, in Lecce, Italy.
- in it together (2025), part of The Enchanting Village residency and exhibition, Ringkøbing, Denmark
- Mobilise/Demobilise (2020), with Sara Larsdotter Hallqvist, Eva Ursprung and Manel Ruiz Blas; Transit Festival, Denmark,
- Ingen Frågar - No-one Asks (2019), with Teater Interakt, Malmö, Sweden, and Transit Festival, Odin Teatret, Denmark.
- her light stretches (2016), with the music of Helen Chadwick, Transit Festival, Odin Teatret, Denmark.
- recipes for life (2010), in collaboration with Eva Ursprung and others, Schaumbad Freies Atelier-Haus, Graz, Austria.
"The darkness, the resonant space, the magic
of the text play and Helen Chadwick's celestial voice which seems to
come from the heavens themselves, the echoes of the mirrors,
it's the digital version of the caves of the ancients ..."
Madeline McNamara, actor and director
(NZ)
